We could all use a little freshening up from time to time. Between kids, jobs and housework, it’s easy to get into a funk. Same clothes, same schedule, same husband… what’s a girl to do? One way to spice things up a bit, and knock about ten years off your age, is to try out a new haircut or style. Check out some ideas below:
20. Half Up
Sweeping your hair back can do a lot for your style. It gets your hair out of your face and lets people see your eyes. It can be as simple as gathering your hair from your ears up and fastening it back with a barrette. To freshen that style up a bit, there are a few options. You can start just above the temples and give the hair a twist once it’s all gathered. Before fastening, move the gathered pieces up about half an inch to add some volume in the front. Use bobby pins to fasten this style from both sides, at the top and underneath. The extra volume and simple twist in the back will take this style to the next level.
19. Elegant Ponytail
High, low or in between, the ponytail is a ‘go to’ hairstyle for most of us ladies. It’s fast and easy, and most of us can accomplish it without a mirror. Wearing a ponytail everyday can get a little boring though. You could dress it up by tying a ribbon around the elastic. If that’s a little too cheerleader for your taste, you can also wrap it it with a piece of your hair. Take a section of hair from underneath the ponytail, once it’s in place, and wrap it around the elastic until you run out of hair. Use a bobby pin to fasten the hair underneath the ponytail and voila! Your ponytail went from basic to elegant.
18. French Braid
The French braid is a classic that can be used literally all over your head! You can of course choose the traditional style, straight down the middle, with all of your hair included. Consider mixing it up though! A braid that circles your head, framing your face, provides a youthful look. Another idea is to start on one side, by your temple, and then braid diagonally across the back of your head, creating an elegant but unusual style. Some people even chose to braid upside-down, starting at the nape of your neck. From there, you braid upward and can choose to end the braid with a bun or top knot.
17. French Twist
No hairstyle is more elegant and classic than a French twist. The French really have a handle on the hair situation. This style is pretty easy to take on; simply twist your hair to the ends, starting at the nape of your neck. Gently pull upwards while twisting and the French twist will begin to form. Tuck the stray hair into the underside of the twist and fasten with bobby pins. You can update this look by literally turning the style on it’s side and twisting from ear to ear instead. Allow some wisps of hair to be loose around your face and neck for a youthful, more natural look.
16. Side Swept
Another way to update your look is to simply part your hair on the opposite side or bring your part a little closer to your temple on either side of your head. Changing your part will add some natural volume and make a subtle difference to your everyday appearance. Use a large curling iron or straightener to sweep the ends out or under to elevate this look a bit. A barrette can also dress up this style a bit, and it can help your hair stay in place. You can place one on either or both sides. You could also sweep it all into a low, loose ponytail on the side that is opposite from the part.
Bangs are a more permanent way to change up your hairstyle, but don’t be afraid! They can make you look younger and update your ‘do without changing the main length. There are a variety of ways to cut and wear bangs, so there is something for everyone. A blunt, thick straight across look is great for ladies with shiny straight hair. If you prefer, you can go with longer bangs and sweep them to the side across your forehead. Some people worry about not being able to get all of the hair out of their faces for a work out, but bangs are really easy to pull back with a headband or bobby pins.
14. Top Knot
The top knot is sort of an effortless look, even though you can spend a lot of time getting there. I do not mean the Phoebe Buffay two second black velvet scrunchy look either. Pull your hair into a high ponytail, but when winding the elastic around for the second wrap, don’t completely pull your hair through. You will have a loop of hair; the next time you go to wrap the elastic around you will secure it for the final time. Use bobby pins to fasten stray hairs and arrange the knot as you see fit. It can be as messy or neat as your day calls for.
13. Sock Bun
This is a ‘go to’ for our ladies in the military or those of us who need a little extra in the thick bun department. The trick is to cut the toe off of an old sock so that it’s open on both ends. Roll it so that it resembles a small doughnut. Put your hair into a ponytail at the desired height of the bun. Slide the sock over the top of the ponytail and then wrap your hair around it. Use bobby pins or hairpins to smooth any pieces that are sticking out. Dress it up with a wrap around braid or headband!
12. Low Ponytail
A low ponytail does not have to be boring. You can dress it up by curling the ends, using a jeweled clip or adding a headband. Another variation is to change it up at the nape of your neck. Start out with a low, loose ponytail that begins just below the nape of your neck. Find the center just above the elastic and make a little opening with your fingers. Gently flip the elastic upward and tuck it through the opening, pulling all of the ponytail through with it. You can go a step further by using a piece of hair to hide the elastic completely.
11. Sexy Curls
Sexy curls can flatter at any age. Using them to frame your face for a night out will definitely turn some heads. To accomplish the look, part your hair as desired and make sure to comb out all of the tangles. Use hot rollers and roll them up to about two inches from your hairline. Gently spritz each section of hair with a light hold hairspray before rolling it. Let the curlers do their magic. When you remove them, use your fingers to separate and lightly brush the curls. Give yourself a moment to admire sexy you before heading out on the town.
10. Up the Shine
Nothing says young and healthy like a head full of shiny hair. There are definitely a slew of salon treatments designed to increase the shine of your hair. One way to enhance it at home starts in the shower. You may not like it, but it works! Once you have washed and conditioned your hair as usual, give it a blast of cold water before turning off the water. This method locks in the conditioner and promotes shiny, healthy hair, even if it does put a damper on your nice hot shower.
9. Sleek and Straight
If you are looking for a sophisticated style that’s always en vogue, try the sleek and straight look. It’s fairly easy to accomplish and will generally last until your next wash. The simplest way is to start with a serum designed for smoothing and protecting your hair from heat treatments. Once that’s in place, blow dry your hair while brushing it straight. Give it a good brush when that’s done to smooth any snags. Continue to straighten it by running a hair straightener from root to tip, slowly. If desired, finish the look with a spritz of light hair spray or mousse to tame any flyaways.
The layered look can go a long way to make your hair look full and stylish. You will need the help of a trusted stylist here. First, find a picture of how you hope to look and be very specific about how much hair you want taken from the longest layer. We’ve all been there, so settle on a max number of inches prior to the cut. Watch as your stylist blow dries and puts on the finish touches so you can copy her moves on a daily basis. This cut can add movement and life to your look.
7. Go Wild!
Girls just want to have fun right? If you have an understanding employer or better still, some time off coming to you, why not have a little fun? This look has many names, but a favorite is unicorn hair. Consider it for a girl’s weekend or vacation and talk to your stylist about using a wash out color. The stylist will usually choose three or four whimsical shades to complete this look. It can be styled any way you can think or, because people with unicorn hair make their own rules! What a way to liven things up and feel like a kid again.
The ombre is a look that can be bold or subtle, depending on your taste. Typically, you see a darker shade at the crown of your head, and it gradually turns into a lighter shade at the tips. This is perfect for someone who is trying to get back to their natural color or darken up some highlights gone wild. This kind of color can be a bit time consuming, so make sure to alert the stylist ahead of time so that you both have ample time allotted. This look will shave years off of your style and make you feel like you are on top of the latest trends.
5. Semi Permanent Color Changes
Have you ever wondered what you would look like as a redhead or are dying to try out blond? Consider trying out a semi-permanent color. A semi-permanent color is formulated without ammonia and deposits color only. It lasts anywhere from 4 to 12 shampoos. These are great for coloring whites or grays too, wink wink. You can actually do these kinds of color trials at home if you wish. Just be sure to read the directions carefully and follow them to the letter. You can be on your way to a bold new look without making a big commitment.
4. Low Lights
Low lights are great for bringing your look out of the summer and into the fall or winter. They look great on ladies with all hair types, so whether it’s straight, curly or in between, this is for you! The process involves darkening strands throughout your hair. You can use them to change your look without dyeing all of your hair. Low lights help to blend in the roots and can make over highlighted hair look a little more natural. You can have some fun with these too. Consider requesting shades of auburn or even purple, which actually looks great on ladies with darker hair.
If you are looking for a way to lighten up your ‘do without changing your entire color, consider getting highlights put in. They are an excellent way to kick off the summer and get that beach bum look. You can go subtle, and stick to something that is a few shades lighter than your natural color, or you can choose a bolder shade and see if blondes really do have more fun. They can do highlights with dye or bleach, so if you have a preference, speak up before they start to mix the potion up. Ask your stylist about the benefits of each but know that once you start bleaching, it can be difficult to change the color.
2. Beach Waves
Beach waves can give you that carefree, ‘don’t bother me I’m on vacation look’. They are really easy to accomplish, and of course there are a few methods. One of the easiest just takes a little mousse and a flat iron. Run a light dose of mousse through your locks. Next, divide your hair into two sections and twist one section up to about your ear. Run the flat iron slowly down the twist, giving it time to set your hair. Repeat this with the other section of hair. Use your fingers to gently pull the twists apart and you have instant beach wave hair.
1. Blunt Cut
If the layered look isn’t for you, perhaps a glossy blunt cut is the answer. Worn by some of the hottest starlets today, if can be a chic and youthful cut perfect for a professional woman. A good haircut is best left to the professionals, so take some time to choose a photo of a cut that’s similar to what you want and then head to the salon. This is a good time to find out about a shine treatment, as this style looks particularly divine when the hair looks shiny and healthy. Keep an eye on what products and tools the stylist uses when she puts on the finishing touches so that you can duplicate that look later.
Whether the change is subtle or a big statement, a new style can make you look younger and feel more confident. Many of these styles are a non permanent way to experiment with your look, so there is no reason not to give them a try. Make a girl’s night out of it and try them with a friend!
