Vice President Kamala Harris, known for her appreciation of hip-hop and R&B, recently expressed admiration for Beyoncé’s latest album, “Cowboy Carter,” which defies traditional genre boundaries. Harris praised two tracks from the album, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” which quickly gained popularity upon their release last month. Beyoncé celebrated becoming the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs chart in an Instagram post on March 19, expressing her hope that in the future, an artist’s race will be irrelevant when it comes to music genres. The album, which took five years to create, showcases Beyoncé’s dedication to blending and experimenting with various musical styles, a process she shared with her loyal fanbase, the Beyhive.
Harris, the United States’ inaugural female vice president, whose ancestry includes both Indian and Black heritage, was notably impressed. “I appreciate your reminder to disregard limitations imposed by others regarding our roles,” she expressed on X. “You’ve reshaped a genre and reaffirmed country music’s African American origins. Your music remains a source of inspiration for us all.”
Beyoncé shared the inspiration behind the album in a recent Instagram post, recalling a past experience where she felt unwelcome. Many fans interpreted this as a reference to her 2016 appearance at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards and the subsequent reaction from the country music industry. Reflecting on the criticisms she faced upon entering the genre, Beyoncé stated that it pushed her to overcome imposed limitations. She emphasized that the album isn’t strictly country but rather a reflection of her artistry.
My mother would say: don’t let people tell you who you are — instead, tell them who you are.

It is my hope that every young AA&NHPI leader holds a sense of pride in knowing that you are representing so many people who came before you. pic.twitter.com/dCIESYHPMh
Harris frequently references her mother’s advice, which resonates with a comparable message: “Rather than allowing others to define you, assertively define yourself.”
