Summer might officially last until later in the month, but for beauty enthusiasts, September signals the start of fall. This is when it’s time to embrace the rich, autumnal hues. A new hair color in a deep chocolate tone or a bold, wine-toned matte lipstick is perfect for welcoming the season. fall nail colors

As you enjoy the final moments of summer sunshine, a manicure in a fresh, seasonal shade can be just what you need to transition into the cooler weather. Just like the season itself, the best fall nail colors bring a variety of choices—think deep cherry tones, rich licorice, and cozy clay shades.

With so many options available, a little inspiration can go a long way. That’s where the professionals step in. Ahead, we consulted with two nail artists to reveal the top polish shades for the season.

Burgundy nails are a perennial favorite for fall. “These shades evoke cozy, nostalgic feelings, reminiscent of rich red wines and snug sweaters,” says Amy Lin, founder of Dear Sundays Nail Studio. While wine-colored polishes are often top of mind, experts point out that there are plenty of ways to interpret this shade. Cranberry, for instance, offers a rich yet lighter option that’s ideal for the shift between seasons.

With the spooky season approaching, black is a go-to choice for nail styles. However, this shade isn’t just limited to Halloween-themed manicures. Both experts agree that jet black polishes are perfect for fall, whether you prefer a classic, solid color or more elaborate nail art.

“Burnt orange is the quintessential fall shade, evoking the warmth of autumn leaves and pumpkin spice,” says Lin. While orange is a staple for the season, this year’s take on burnt orange is more grounded and earthy. Rather than a bright, bold shade, it leans into warm tones like rich browns and brick reds, making it suitable for all skin tones. The trick is to choose a shade that enhances your natural undertones.

Jelly nail looks are typically linked to summer, but Gerstein points out that they can be just as effective for fall. The secret to adapting this style for the season lies in selecting the right shade. “Darker colors are more versatile and can be used for a variety of nail art designs,” she explains.

“As the temperatures drop, our color palettes tend to follow suit. Navy blue is the ideal shade for transitioning from vibrant summer colors to the richer, more subdued tones of fall. It’s elegant, refined, and pairs beautifully with the darker jackets and deep denim blues that define the season,” says Lin.

Nail trends change frequently, but some styles manage to stay popular, like chrome nails. The glossy finish of metallic polishes has become a classic choice for manicures, especially in the fall. Lin mentions that silver, in particular, complements the deeper tones of the season and provides a striking contrast to the usual autumn colors.

In addition to cranberry, Gerstein predicts that black cherry will be a leading trend this season. The shade has already gained popularity, from runways to hair color choices. Although merlots and burgundies are autumn favorites, Gerstein points out that black cherry offers a bolder and more contemporary vibe.

Nude polishes remain timeless, no matter the nail shape or design. This fall, however, experts highlight taupe as the most stylish way to embrace the trend. It’s not only simple and elegant but also a versatile shade that complements all skin tones.
